THRILLING CONTEST

VICTORY FOR GRAMMAR The match between Grammar Old Boys and St. Luke's was the most exciting that has been seen in Auckland for a long time, and was always full of thrills. Tho features of the game were the brilliant teamwork of both sides, the perfect understanding among the Grammar forwards, and tho fast pace which was maintained throughout the whole game. Although Grammar eventually won, the issue was always in doubt. It was only (he perfectly-balanced unison among its forwards which enabled Grammar to pull the game out of the fire at a critical moment and add three goals in quick succession. St. Luke's had Grammar defending stolidly for the first 20 minutes, until Jerran broke away ar.d sent across a beautiful centre, for Pearce to open Grammar's account. As tho result of good combined efforts among the forwards, Corin and Carroll secured two goals for St. Luke's, and it led 2 —l at half-time.

In tine second half play swung quickly from one. end to the other. The Grammar forwards frequently reached the circle, hut their shots went wide. After >Rougliton had equalised the score, Carroll again put St. Luke's in the lead. After that, however, Jerran. Poughton and Armstrong scored as the result of beautiful rhythmic pasirig. The St. Luke's forwards then swept downfield, for Carroll to score. But the Grammar forwards were at their peak, and Twigden clinched the game with a strong shot. . It would he impossible to pick out any particular player as worthy of special praise, the combination being perfect. Messrs. H. E. Watts and A. McLean were the umpires.

PAPATOETOE'S SUCCESS POOR FORM OF Y.M.C.A. Playing its first game this season, Y.M.C A. ga've a disappointing exhibition against Papatoetoe. The suburban side met very little opposition, and gained an easy victory by 8 goals to 0. Y.M.C.A. lacked cohesion and, although it made a few scattered attempts, it failed to penetrate the defence. At half-time Papatoetoe was leading by 3 goals to 0. Y.M.C.A. then kept the suburban team at bay for a few minutes, but Papatoetoe commenced to press and dominated the play for the remainder of the game. Monteith, the Papatoetoe and Auckland centre-forward, was the best front division man on the field In scoring five goals, he gave a splendid display, and combined well with his other forwards, lorbett, Smytheman, McCormirk and Elliott. All Papatoetoe s backs were sound. Campbell, in Y.M.C.A. s goal, did a good day's work, while Beere was prominent in the forwards. c (t Monteith (5), McCormick ('.2) and Smytheman scored goals for Papatoetoe. Messrs. T. Clark and C. Preston were umpires.
