COMBINED CLUBS' EVENTS BOATS FINISH EARLY MUIMAI LOSES HER MAST Combined harbour and cruising races were held by the Royal Akarana and Tamaki Yacht Clubs and the Richmond Cruising Club on Saturday afternoon. The keel yachts, mullet boats and one section of 18-footers started from Judge's Bay and raced to Howick, and another section of 18-footers and under classes started and finished off the new jetty at Ponsonby. A fr°sh breez3 from the south-west prevailed throughout the afternoon, enabling the boats to finish early. In the race for class Y Muimai fouled the Pile beacon and carried away her mast. The motor yacht Cyrena (Mr. G. F. Bellve), which acted as flagship, went to the assistance of Muimai and towed her back to the Ponsonby jetty. Harbour Races

Manaia led the way over the line in the harbour race for classes M and V and close on her stern came Manene, Vaalele, Mawhiti, Maroro and Charmaine. The following were late:—Limerick, 3m 20s; Maranita, 3m 255; Mimic, lJm 40s. Manene went into the lead shortly after the start and Mawhiti replaced Manaia on the run down the harbour. The race started at 2.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Manene, 4h 32m ss; Mawhiti, 4h 34m 21 s; Manaia, 4h 40m 255; Limerick, 4h 41m 30s; Charmaine, 4h 42m 30s; Maroro, 4h 42m 50s; Vaalele, 4h 44m 4(is. Mimic did not finish.

There was a good start in the race for class S. Annette was first away and was closely followed by Sirona, Marlene, Sceptre and Kangatira. Tiki was 8m 50s late. Mahana put in an appearance, but did not cross the starting line. Annette continued her lead and on the completion of the first round was lm 4s ahead of Marlene. which was lm 37s in front of Sirona. In the second round Marlene took charge and was first home.

The race started at 2.50 p.m. The finishing times were:—Marlene, 4h 27m 8s; Sirona, 4h 31m 30s; Sceptre, ill .'Km 555; Rangaiira, 4h 35m 15s. Tiki and Annette did not finish. Endeavour crossed the line first in the race for classes T and X and less than a boat's length away followed Treasure, Vamp and Jem Mac. Further astern came Rona M and Shalimar. Salome was 10m 45s late. Vamp soon overhauled Endeavour and Treasure and had'a big lead, which she maintained on both rounds of the course. Treasure was 38s ahead of Endeavour on the completion of the first round, but in the second Endeavour caught and passed Treasure. The race started at 2.55 p.m. The finishing times were:—Vamp, 4h 33m 345; Endeavour, 4h 41m 255; Treasure, 4h 44m 2s; Jem Mac, 4h 59m 12s. Shalimar, Salome and Kona M dirt not finish. A Good Recovery Swallow was first over the line in the race for class Y. Then followed Rebel, Muimai, Koala, Sea Elf and Kea. The following were late: —Aloha, lm 555; Jos - , 2m 30m; Mania, 4m 355; Tempest, sin 10s. Swallow maintained her lead in the first round. The times passing the flagship were:—Swallow, 3h 45m 575; Eebel, 3h 46m sfis; Mania, 3h 47m 10s; Kea, 3h 47m 58s; Aloha, 3h 51m IDs; Tempest, 3h 54m 15s. Muimai collided with the Pile beacon and her plight was brought to the notice of Tempest, ivhich retired at this stage. Mania, which was over 4m late in starting, made a good recovery in the second round, and went into the lead. The race "started at 3 p.m. The finishing times were:—Mania, 4h 44m 20s; Swallow, 4h 45m 465; Rebel, 4h 48m 425; Kea, 4h 52m 345. Koala, Sea Elf, Joy, Aloha, Muimai Tempest did not finish. Eleven Z class boats were sent away to a splendid start, headed by Kupe", with Te Utu, Tanya. Tamati, Gypsy, Tinopai and the others handy. Tamati gradually worked her way into" the lead and crossed the finishing line 46s ahead of Kupe. The race started at 3.5 p.m. The finishing times were:—Tamati, 4h 24m 345; Kupe, 4h 25m 20s; Tanya, 4h 25m 225; Meola, 4h 25m 40s; Betty, 4h 26m 30s; Te Utu, 4h 2Sm 3s; Gypsy, 4h 29m 18s; Billy Boy, 4h 33m 335; Paddy, 4h 33m 41s; Rio, 4h 33m 455. Four naval service whalers started at 2.35 p.m. in the race for their class, but only three completed the course as follows:—R.X.V.R. whaler Xo. 2, 4h 31m 525; Philomel whaler 28F2, 4h 36m 21s; R.X.V.R. whaler Xo. 1, 4h 40m 21s. Cruising Events The keel yachts and the 26ft and 22ft mullet boats went outside Brown's Island beacon to Howick, the V and M classes proceeding direct to the finishing line. The keel /achts were sent away together, and when the last flag fell Altair crossed the line just ahead of Roiaata, Owhanga. Janet, Vectis and Xgahau. Then followed Pandora, Valdora and Rawhiti. Dorothy was 4m late. Xgahau gradually overhauled the leaders and finished well ahead of the fleet. ]n the race for class H the boats crossed the line in the following; order:—Omatere, Corona, Celox, Bluestreak. Spray, Starlight, Arawa, Nomad and Calypso. Omatere held her lead for some distance, and Jater broke her spinnaker boom. The race staited at 2.46 p.m. The finishing times were:—Corona, 4h Sm 375; Omatere, 4h 11m 3s; Spray, 4h 12m 10s; Starlight, 4h 33m 30s; Arawa, 4h 13m 58s; Bluestreak, 4h 1 14m 40s; Calypso, 4h 10m 3Ss; Nomad, 4h lSin Is. Kohara led the way o\er the line in the race for classes L and N, and next to her came Macushla, Valkyria, Melita, Waialae, Winifred and Waiapu. Macushla was soon in the lead and was never headed. I Spinnaker Trouble The cruising race for M and V classes brought out Surprise, Maranui, Shamrock. Malolo, Leverette, Magic, Memutu. Irena and Velox. A squall struck the boats shortly after the start, and some of them had a great deal of trouble with their spinnakers. Surprise continued her lead for some distance, and was then overtaken by Riptide and Irena. HERNE BAY CLUB RACES FOR SMALL CLASSES Two races were held by the Heme Bay Sailing Club on Saturday afternoon, starting and finishing off the new Ponsonby jetty. There was a smart breeze from the southwest which gave the boats a good test on all points of sailing. The race for the Silver Fern class brought out seven competitors, which were sent away to a good start. MANUKAU CRUISING CLUB SUCCESSES OF MAILE Three races were decided by the Mannkau Cruising Club on Saturday, the resail of the Fearon handicap cup for yachts, ISft and under, and a general handicap. Maile was successful in winning the three events, which were sailed in conjunction. Boats taking part in the general handicap were:— Kia Ora, Shirley, Maile, Foam, Wixie M., Aloma, Sea King, Maia, Alerte, Ranui, Aoma, which were despatched off their handicaps in that order. Aoma was not eligible for the Fearon Cup, and Kia Ora, Wixie M. and Aoma could not take part in the re-sail. When the limit boats were sent away the wind was from the south. After making a short board to round the first mark the wind enabled them to lay through to thebottom mark off Waikowhai. Unfortunately for the scratch boat Aoma, when her starting time came, the wind had shifted to the south-west, and she had a hard beat out. Meanwhile on the first round Maile had taken the lead, whiSo Wixie M. sailed into second place. On the run up Aloma improved her position. The second round saw the wind settled in the. south-west, and Aoma made a great effort to catch the leaders, while Wixie M. lost her advantage. On the run home, with spinnakers drawing full, Maile maintained her lead, and Shirley retired. It will be resailed at an early date. REGATTA POSTPONED The Howick Sailing Club's annual regatta, which was to have been held yesterday, was postponed owing to unfavourable weather con* ditions. POWER-BOAT CARNIVAL [FROM OCR OWN HUNTLY, Sunday The Huntly Power-Boat Club held a successful racinsr carnival on the Waikato River yesterdav afternoon. The weather was ideal and there was a large attendance. Visitors were present irorn Auckland, Matamata, Hani* ilton and Rangiriri.
