WINNING SIRES

DOMINION STATUS YEARLING REPRESENTATIVES THREE LEADERS NOT IN LIST BY SPEARMINT Thirty-one sires are represented at the annual yearling sales to take place at Trentham on January 21. Last year there were 28, and in 1931 no fewer than 12 sires had progeny entered for the sale. All the .'VI had progeny racing during the same number of totalisator clays of the holiday meetings with the exception of Hambury, Beau Pore and Colonel Cvgnus, the oldest of whose progeny are now yearlings, and Heroic, who has nothing racing in New Zealand at the present time, although he has a two-year-old from the Leighton mare Lady Seaborn in training in Auckland. Heroic is represented at the sales bv a colt foal from Prodiee, bred by .Mr. M. H . Tims, and a half-brother to Gallio. Honours among the sires of the Dominion during the holiday season were shared by Chief Ruler, Hunting Song and Psychology, each of whom sired winners of over £2300. Of Chief Ruler's total, £IB3O was won by his two-year-old representatives Royal Chief, Francis Drake, Greenwich, Allspice and Aiwai. Psychology was indebted to Cuddle for most of his amount, but Skyway and Mata Hari were also winners. Hunting Song, as usual, had winners all over the Dominion. The racing had an interesting effect on the sire premiership to date. Paper Money is still in front with winners of £6445, but his lead has been reduced. Chief Ruler has ousted Acre from second place, and Hunting Song's total is now only a few hundreds sterling less than that of the last-mentioned. Sires represented by winners of over £2OOO are Paper Money, £6145; Chief Ruler, £6239; Acre, £5711; Hunting Song, £5355; Colossus, £2974; Lord Quex, £2913; Siegfried, £2840; Psychology, €2808; Raccful, £2737; Gainscourt, £2537; Nigger Minstrel, £2515; Valkyrian, £2150; General Latour, £2367; Limond, £2307; Winning Hit, £2203; Robespierre, £2152; Lackham, £2105; Musketoon, £2141; and Silverado, £2Oll. Siegfried Successful Paper Money, Chief Ruler and Acre are not represented at the yearling sales, nor are Psychology, Raccful, Nigger Minstrel, General Latour, Winning Hit, Musketoon and Silverado. There are 11 yearlings by Hunting Song, the majority offered by Mr. Gaine Carrington, and many from winner-producing mares. Next to Hunting Song, the sire represented who did best during the holiday meetings was Lord Quex, with winners of £1750. These included Lowenberg, Round Up, Charade, Passion Flower, Lord Hereford and McHeath, who won three races. Siegfried came out best of the young sires with winners of £1650. The fact that he is the sire of the Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, and the G.N. Derby winner, Essex, will cause his yearlings to be in demand. He is represented by 10 youngsters, one a sister to Essex. Siegfried's winners during the holidays included Essex, Felicitation and Lady Siegfried. The most successful South Island sire was the recently defunct Robespierre, who got opportunities only late in me and seems to liave profited by them. Ho had v> .liners of £1312, including Peony Rose, Rebel Lad Thcrnudor, Gold Label. Rousseau, Rebel Chief and Rotokino. Robespierre is represented at the sales by colts from Sundance and Distrait. The last-mentioned is a nailsister to Left, dam of Wotan. Lackham Consistent Gainscourt's progeny were very little behind those of Robespierre in earning £l3lO. His winners were Tiger Gain. Armacourt and Rotoma. Gainscourt is represented at the sales by two lots, one being closely related to Essex Pombal's son, Davolo, won the principal race of the day on thieo occasions during the holidays, and credited him with £865. There are two colts bv him to be offered. One is a threequarter brother to Davolo, and the other a brother to Burnish «iud Epigram and half-brother to Entail. " Lnckham's record this season has been an excellent one. His son Mala proved himself one of the best thiee-vear-olds in Australia, and holiday winners were Barley Almond, Clessamot, Laggard, Diamond Cutter, Export and Lacquer, who between them compiled £855. Lackham is represented by a colt and a lillv, the former being out of a half-sister to Dungarvan. Colossus sire of Dungarvan, is still meeting with success. The latter won the Marton Cup and dead-heated at Manawatu, while Rust em and Top Row were also winners. Colossus is represented by four '°Lord Warden seems to be getting more winners than formerly. L :u .y Kvra won a double, while \ dung, Sailing Ladv and Yale were also winners. Lord Warden's contributions to the sales are 14 yearlings, including brothers to Gustos. Ladv Kvra and Cerne Abbas and half-brothers to Shy and Knockfin. Imported Sires' Position Limond's draft comprises four colts and two fillies, and the continued success of his two-year-olds in Australia will make for continued interest in his stock. Spiral put the Manawatu Cup to his credit. Tidal is represented at the sales for the first time by four yearlings, one being a half-brother to Nun Nicer. The successes of Flood Tide and King Neptune will draw attention to the possibilities of those lots. None of the other sires represented has.met with much success this season with the exception of' Yalkyrian and Cockpit, who are both consistent sires of winners. Two young sires who had winners during the holidays were Vaals (Dragon Moth and Cheval do Volee) and Nightmarcli (Stolen March and Nightlass). Martarina was credited with the double winner Gas Mask. Cape Horn had three winners. Helen Ford. Lady Inn and Cape Gabo, and Night Raid's winners wore Gay Colleen and Land Raid, both on the West Coast of the South Island.
