WELLINGTON CUP

BEST FORM ENGAGED ENTRY OF THIRTY-THREE THREE PREVIOUSLY SUCCESSFUL. An imposing list of .33 names constitutes the nominations for tlie Wellington Cup, to be decided on January 20. All the nominees have been racing recently, a large proportion with success. The bringing together of winners from all Darts of the country will make a very interesting handicap, for the results, from meeting to meeting, have been more than usually consistent. Flood Tide, Essex and Shy have good credentials from Ellerslie, while the good form of Argentic, Scotland, Ponty and Oratory no doubt will receive due recognition. Flood Tide's reputation was enhanced by his fine success at the Auckland carnival and he will have admirers from all over the Dominion for the race under review, as the distance will suit him. After dead-heating with Rona Bay at Awapuni, Dungarvan went on to win the Marton Cup, being chased homo by Spiral, the Manawatu Cup winner, who had also divided Lowenberg and Limbohm in the Liverpool Handicap on the final day of the Manawatu meeting. After being placed both at Awapuni and in the Marton Cup, Arctic King won the Aldworth Stakes at the latter meeting, and he is expected to be even better at Trentham. From a second in the Manawatu Cup Tiger Gain went on to win the Wairarapa Cup, and Hazoor, his runnerup, won the chief event on the second day at fauherenikau. Davolo, who carries the colours of the former Wellington Cup winner, Compris, won successive races at a mile, 10 furlongs and a mile on the Otago circuit, while Guarantee won the Invercargill Cup and ran second in the Southland Handicap. Land Raid scored in the two j chief races at Grevmoiith, one being at a mile and a-quarter. Tunneller won the Otago Handicap, j with Queen of Song, last year's Wellington Cup winner, in second place. Tunneller's stable-mate, Vintage, is credited with a very satisfactory performance in the Waikouniti Cup, in which he was going like a winner until a few chains from the post. As ho pulled up sound, he should be capable of another good race at Trentham, although years and the little racing he has done must weigh against his winning the race again, as it must in the case of Grand Jury, who won the Wellington Cup in 1931. Both Riccarton and Ellerslie form indicate a first-rate chance for Argentic, j who showed in the Clifford Plate that his Auckland Cup effort had not tried his powers too severely. Scotland also will be sure of a good measure of support, for 12 furlongs is well within his effective radius. At first sight, the Wellington Stakes appears to be a duel between Francis Drake and Paper Slipper, the best of their respective ages in the race, but Paper Slipper has also been entered for the Telegraph Handicap.
