OFFENCE BY COLLECTOR DRINKING AND GAMBLING Charged with fraudulently omitting to account ior sums of money totalling £]:3 5s Gil collected between November 27 and December 14, Joseph Daniels, aged 44. a labourer, appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. C. |>. On-Walker, S.M. A charge of stealing £]».>, belonging to the Labourers' Union, Southdown Freezing Works, was withdrawn. Accused pleaded guilty. Constable J. H. said that accused had come into the Newton police station one night and asked to bo locked up. He made a statement in which he admitted having failed to pay to the secretary of the union fees which lie had collected from the labourers at the Southdown Freezing Works. Detective-Sergeant McHugli said that accused, who. was a well-known hurdle rider and jockey until he had been badly injured in 15)21, had been drinking when he used the money and had also gambled some of it on racing. Accused was very well spoken of at the freezing works and the manager had offered to reinstate him. He was looked upon as a very decent man. Accused was admitted to probation for 12 months on condition that ho made restitution of £l3 5s 6d and took out a prohibition order. He was also ordered to abstain from betting on horse races.
