ILLNESS OF POPE

ANXIETY AT THE VATICAN

RECOVERY HOPES DWINDLE EXTENSION OF PARALYSIS (Received December 27, 7.15 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, Dec. 2(3 The Vatican's hopes for the recovery of Pope Pius XI. dwindled last night. It was reported that paralysis had extended to his entire left side, that his left arm was useless, and that he was not able to move his legs throughout thp day. The Pope passed a disturbed night owing to intermittent pains in his left leg. However, he slept well into morning, when his condition generally was satisfactory. His Holiness received hundreds of telegrams of congratulation on his Christmas Eve broadcast, which, far from exhausting him, apparently stimulated him owing to the psychological effect of being again in touch with the outside world. The Pope spent Christmas Day reading and writing. He heard a midnight M ass that night.
