MEMORABLE YEAR
CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE ' SUCCESSFUL EMPIRE CONGRESS The 14th Congress of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire, held in "Wellington, has made the past year a memorable one. states the annual report of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. Partly owing to the early preparations with the organisation of the congress, the event proved a complete success, continues the report. Resolutions of considerable importance to Empire trade and commerce were carried. Hie New Zealand chambers were given a broader conception of commercial affairs of Empire and valuable personal contacts were made. Delegates in attendance numbered 107. After discussion by the executive on the attitude of the Associated C hamhers of Commerce to the jwlicy of the Labour Government the following resolution was carried: "That our policy shall be to offer such helpful criticism, avoiding purely .destructive criticism, with the object of assisting the Government to obtain all legitimate objectives with as little dislocation to the commercial community as possible, ana avoiding injury to the public welfare. This resolution does not prevent r£iticism of any Government measure which is contrary to the objects of this association." t Representations to the Government were made on a variety of subjects and the Prime Minister had expressed his appreciation of the co-oj>eration offered. The Government would value the opinions of chambers of commerre, he said, and, although there would not always be agreement, the Government was always fully prepared to hear the other side.
