PRESIDENT'S INTENTIONS NO NEW TAXES YET (Received November 11, 7.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 At to-day's confex-enco with journalists, President Roosevelt reaffirmed his pre-election promises not to propose new taxes in the next session of Congress and to avoid commitments in connection with the balancing of the Budget. Mr. Roosevelt indicated, however, that the Budget for the next fiscal year would not be larger than that for the current year. He added that whatever changes were made in corporate taxes, they would not be retrospective because the Government needed money. LABOUR STANDARDS MR. ROOSEVELT'S AIMS AN UPWARD LEVELLING WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 President Roosevelt, in a message to the delegates from 39 States, assembled for the Third National Conference on Labour Legislation, said he believed the country had given an unmistakable mandate to its legislators and executives to seek "a levelling upward of labour standards." Mr. Roosevelt said his immediate aims were:—Safe, healthful places in the world, with adequate care and support, for those incapacitated because of accidents, industrial troubles, disease, old age or unemployment; reasonably short hours; adequate annual incomes; proper housing and the elimination of child labour. FEWER UNEMPLOYED UNITED STATES FIGURES (Received November 11, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 The United States Department of Commerce reports that the number of unemployed is steadily diminishing and was slightly less than 9,000.000 at the ond of September.
