AUSTRALIAN TENNIS
CHALLENGE FOR DAVIS CUP POSSIBLE TOUR BY WOMEN Provided that a suitable team is available, Australia will challenge in the Davis Cup competition next year. The decision was reached at a meeting of the council o,f the Lawn Tenuis Association of Australia after letters on the subject had been received from the various States. The zone in which tho team will challenge will be decided later, although it appears almost certain that the American zone will be chosen. Following the receipt of a monetary offer by the English Lawn Tennis Association toward the cost of sending an Australian women's team to Wimbledon it was decided to appoint a committee to investigate the matter. The offer was a guaran tee of £250 for a match against an English team, and the first £IOO from the receipts, and after that 60 per cent of the takings. It was stipulated that Misses J„ Hartigan and T. Coyne should he included in the team. The president, Mr. N. Brookes, suggested the name of Miss N. Wynne. Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and West Australia, expressed themselves in favour of issuing a Davis Cup challenge. The secretary, Mr. A. H. Barraclough, announced that he had tentatively booked passages for the team to travel to America.
