WINGATUI WORK

TWO-YEAR-OLD TRIAL ATALANTA LASS THE WINNER McLean stakes candidate [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUNBDIN, Tuesday Tlio most, interesting 'gallop at ingattii this morning was provided by several horses being schooled at the barrier, most of them being kept going for half a inilo on the course proper. The field was made up of tho three-year-old Lord Byron, half-brother to Guarantee, and tlio following two-year-olds: Atalanta Lass, sister to Lord Byron; Lord Nuffield, Gusto, Actor, Golden Flair and Forecast. Mr. C. Gieseler was at the barrier and got them away to a good line. Forecast was smartest out, but he was joined in a eouplo of strides by Atalanta Lass. Forecast dropped out and Atalanta Lass and Lord Nuffield came up the running in front of Gusto, with the others handy. Atalanta Lass beat Lord Nuffield by a length in s:ls. However, the latter apparently had something in reserve. Gusto was two lengths away and the others were fairly handy. It appeared to bo a gallop for experience rather than a test of speed, nevertheless Atalanta Lass should take some beating in the McLean Stakes. It was a good gallop, as the going was not fast, as they cut into the track. Forecast was pulled up at the turn and taken back to the barrier, when lie again jumped off smartly. TRENTIIAM CONTINGENT UNLIKELY TO COME NORTH [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Tuesday In view of the poor form of the Trcntham-trained horses at Otaki on Saturday, it is unlikely that any of them claiming engagements at Auckland will make the trip. Sunee has been scratched and Cricket is another who will bo staying at home. It is also improbable that Deficit will go. Deficit is always a better horse for a race, but the Great Northern Guineas is run on tho first day of the Ellerslie meeting and his display at Otaki would give him little chance. Prostration continues to work well. He will have his first race at Masterton and he is Trentham's most likely candidate for tlio New Zealand Cup. It was at Mas'terton last year that Cuddlo opened her winning sequence for Mr. 11. J. Murphy. Shy is also to run in the New Zealand Cup and It. W. Savage has been retained to ride him. Shy's form, although lie is only a hack, so far is better than the average, but provided Prostration stands, tho latter is the better New Zeailand Cup prospect.

T. li. George has received word from Australia that if Cuddle fails at Caulfield next Saturday, she will probably be sent back to him to prepare for her second assault on tho Auckland Cup, states the Wellington correspondent of the Herald.

HORSES AT HAWERA SOUND EFFORT BY NOTIUM [by TF.LKGKAI'II —owx correspondent] HAWEKA, Tuesday Candidates for Ellerslie, Trentham and Waverlev galloped at Hawera this morning on tho outside of tho course proper, the going being firm. Notiuni had to be held back to Master Limond over six furlongs, run in 1.24. Notium could have done much better. Ho leaves for Auckland tomorrow night. Brioni sprinted three furlongs in 41s. Gay Step went well for a maiden, to run half a mile in 52 1-os. Naughty Marietta, picked up by Little Robin after a furlong, required 545. Friesland and Lowenberg went an easy half in 555. Friesland, in particular, could have done much better. His knee injury did not prove nearly as serious as was at first anticipated. Whether the pair go to Riccarton will depend on their showings at Waverlev. Advance Plane held Callamosfc comfortably oyer half a mile in 555. Corowa worked lazily over six in 1.25 3-5. He has been entered for tho Waverlev meeting, but is practically certain to go to Trentham.

Student Prince shtided Silvanus over fivo furlongs in 1.8 1-5, the latter having a big disadvantage in the weights. Lickern and Fairy Dale sprinted three furlongs together in 40s.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Frimsel, by Grand Knight from Rachel and half-sister to Rabbi, is one of six mares who have been selected by Mr. A. E. Cooper to mate this year with Peter Pan. Of the 40 nominees for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Stewards' Handicap 15 have been winners already this season,. whilo the majority of tho remainder have shown good form.

The Southern owner-trainer Mr. .T. S. Shaw, yesterday purchased from Mr. G. I). Beatson tho three-year-old gelding by Tidal —Asterism, for a price stated as 300gns., reports the Hkhalu's Hastings correspondent. The gelding is a promising sort.

The apprentice N. Cavancy, accompanied F. "Davis to Auckland and is to fulfil riding engagements at the spring meeting. Cavancy, who commenced riding last season, soon gained some success and is regarded as a very promising light-weight.

It was originally arranged that the weights for the first day of the Dargavillo Racing Club's meeting at Avondale should appear yesterday, but they will not be declared until after tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting, and will be declared next Tuesday.

Tho Hawk, who is now 17 years old, is still alivo and well in Ilawkc's Bay. During the winter his owner, J. M. Cameron, again brought him down from the farm to the stables. Tho Hawk, with 1.30 i, still holds the mile record for IHemington, but Peter Pan has reduced the Commonwealth record to 1.35 i at I{andwick.

Tho champion stayer of Belgium is Marlborough, a nine-year-old son of Blandford, who has been racing on tho Continent for about live years and has won 26 of his 49 raeex, at distances from a mile and a-quarter to two miles and three-quarters. His owner is M Snrruy, who bought him after he had won a selling race for his English owner for 20,000 francs.

The Stonyhurst Handicap, otic mile, to be run on the fourth day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, is i'or three-year-olds only. Gallio, who claims engagements in the Stewards' Handicap and the Canterbury Cup, as well as the Derby, has not been entered for any events on the final day, so tho race should be an ope.u one, as form stands at present.
