EXCITING TENNIS
AMERICAN TITLE RETENTION BY PERRY MISS JACOBS DEFEATED (Received September 13, 6.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 12 Tho English champion, Fred Perry, won tho national singles in tho tennis championships at Forest Hills to-day for the third time. He defeated J. D. Budge (United States), 2—o, 6 —2, B—6,8 —6, I—6, 10 —8, in an exciting match which lasted 2 hours 50 minutes. 1 As the score plainly indicates, the tide of battle swung from one to the other player in the long and gruelling match. The partisanship of the 13,000 spectators for Budge, with cheering and groaning wiiich was improper at times, greatly annoyed Perry. Although the Englishman won, Budge scored 28 games to Perry's 27, and 187 points to his 180. In the fifth set, after Budge had broken Perry's service in the eighth game, to lead 5 —3, the prospects of an American victory brought tho crowd to a high pitch of excitement. Then Perry, with a remarkable display of slashing tennis, won three straight games to lead 6—5. Tho American again rallied, and forced the battle to 7 —6 and B—7,8 —7, and, although several times he reached point score for the match, Perry always beat back the threat and finally gained a 10—8 lead for victory. In the final of the women's singles Miss Marble sprung a surprise by defeating Miss Jacobs, 4—6, 6—3, 6—2. It would have been Miss Jacobs' fifth consecutive American championship, and her disappointment was keen. After a shaky first set Miss Marble, who has been out of active tennis for two years because of illness, played a strong, steady game, which the defending champion could not successfully counter.
