URGENT OPERATION
CAPTAIN OF MABAMA APPEAL TO THE NIAGARA RISING SEA INTERVENES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received September 13, G. 35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 13 A wireless message was received in Sydney on Friday evening by the Union Steam Ship Company, stating that the master of the Marama, Captain Kane, had developed acute appendicitis while the vessel was on I her way across the Tasman to Well- ( ington, and that an urgent operaf tion was being arranged. Tho message was from the master of the Niagara, who stated that ho had received a radio from tho Marama seeking the services of the Niagara's surgeon to assist in the operation. The Niagara then was on her way to the Marama and expected to reach her shortly after midnight, Sydney time. The Marama had changed her course and the vessels were converging. Another wireless message received in Sydney last evening read: "Captain Kane's condition is satisfactory." From this it was deduced that Dr. Mercer of the Marama had operated on Captain Kane without the assistance of Or. Sweeney of the Niagara. The chief officer of the Marama, Mr. T. Bevan, who took over tho command of tho vessel when the captain became ill, wirelessed that owing to the rising sea he could not reach the Niagara. Consequently the Marama was heading direct for Wellington at top speed. A Press Association telegram from Wellington on Saturday stated that the Union Company announced that word had been received that the operation on Captnin Kane was performed by tho vessel's surgeon without the assistance of the Niagara's surgeon. The operation was entirely successful and the patient is progressing satisfactorily. I
