NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNEY SURPRISE BY , HAMILTON GIRL [BY TELEGRAPH —PR-ESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday Exceptional success attended the Dominion badminton championship and handicap tournament, which concluded on Saturday night. More than 150 individual entries were received, including competitors from all parts l of the North Island and several from Otago, and a healthy profit was shown on the tournament. In spite of a splendid fight by a young New Plymouth contender, J. Spedding, the final of the men's championship singles went to P. Hawksworth, of Masterton, the present North Island title-holder. Miss M. Edinondson, a 21-year-old Hamilton girl, caused one of the surprises of the tournament in defeating Miss J. E Ramsay, the Auckland player, in the final of the women's singles. Results in the championship finals were:— Men's singles P. Hawksworth (Masterton), beat J. Spedding (New Plymouth), 15—0, 15 —10. Women's singles: Miss M. Edmondson (Hamilton) beat Miss J. E. Ramsay (Auckland), 11—6, 6—ll, 11—6. Men's doubles: P. Hawksworth (Masterton) and G A. Pearce (Wellington), beat J. J. Neale and Ridyard (Wellington), 15—7, 12—15, 35 —10. Women's doubles: Misses Ramsay and Wade (Auckland) beat Mrs. Wren (Auckland) and Miss Edmondson (Hamilton), 17—16, 15—5. Combined doubles: P. Hawksworth (Masterton) and Miss Fleming (Wellington) beat J. Neale (Wellington) and Mrs. Wren (Auckland), 15—10, 15—10. Winners of the other championship sections were:— . . B Grade. —Men's singles: G. Dunn (Levin). Women's singles: Miss A. Dempster (Hamilton). Men's doubles: G. W. Gower and \V. G. Clough (Hamilton). Women's doubles: Misses M. Kerr and M. Bolwell (Dunedin). Combined doubles: R- Orr (Masterton) and Miss M. Kerr (Dunedin). C Grade. —Men's singles: D. Dobson (Xaimata). Women's singles: Miss J. Medley (New Plymouth). Men's douhles: A. Howe and R. Mundt (Kaimiro). Women s doubles: Misses I. Fow and L. Street (Hamilton). Combined doubles: R. Therkleson (Ratapiko) and Miss Street (Hamilton).

CLAIMS OF SOUTH ISLAND [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH,' Sunday The success of the Dominion championship and handicap tournament at New Plymouth and the beneficial results of the visit of the Canadian professional, J. F. Devlin, to New Zealand dnrincr the year, were stressed at the annual conference of the New Zealand Badminton Federation on Saturday. Mr. W. S. C. Harris, of Auckland, the federation president, was chairman. Consideration was given to the claims or the South Island for the 1037 championships, it being pointed out that 25 per cent of players lived in the South Island. The management committee was directed to invite applications and to decide on the allocation of the tournament. Waikato made ft tentative offer to conduct (he championships. As a recommendation for inclusion in the tournament regulations it was decided to divide the profits on future championships on a fifty-fifty basis between the federation ind the association concerned The following officers were elected: —Patron, Lord Galway, subject to consent; president, Mr. W. S. C. Harris (Auckland); vicepresidents. Mr. C. J. E. Smith (Taranaki), Rev. H. W. Austin (Wellington); executive, Messrs. A. H. Richards (Wellington), C. K. Eastwood (Wairarapa), F. S. Salinger (Otago), W. It. McCallum (Canterbury), A. McDonald (Western Districts), J. Colledge, V. Runciman. D. James, G. Callis (Auckland), J. B. Wilson (Hawke's Bay); secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. W. Hyland.
