DEFEAT OF CITY
GOOD OPPORTUNITIES LOST After making a good impression in the first spell, Citv faded away in the second half, in which Richmond had much the better of the game. The City backs failed to make the most of numerous chances in the early stages. With any support at all, tries would have been scored from good runs by Rata and McLaughlin. The Richmond backs played with more finish, their handling being more accurate. A penalty goal by Dufty gave City a two-point lead in the first half. Soon after play was commenced' in the second half, Davis hustled Dufty and scored a simple try. A few minutes later the City backs received a chance, and Rata made a fine opening. He held on too long, however, and a tfy was lost. Rata retired with an injury, and City was forced to play a man short. City's backs continued to throw the ball about, and both Brown McLaughlin went close to scoring. Richmond did not get many opportunities, but its backs made the most of its chances. Mincham and W. Tittleton were associated in a good movement, which gave Davis his second try. In the concluding Btages, Richmond dominated the game. For the winners, Beyer, the' former Auckland Rugby representative, played a sound game at- fullbacly, although he was a little slow in his movements. W r . Tittleton was easily the best of the backs, and his penetration often" turned defence into attack. Mincham also played a fine game, showing plenty of pace in making openings Wilkie was prominent on the wing. Bickerton was not so prominent as usual, hut Powel! did good work behind the scrum. Davis and Broadhead were the pick of the forwards. Dufty did an amount, of useful work at fullback for City, but Cooper, a new player on the wing, did not justify his inclusion. Until he retired, Rata was the best of the backs. Both Brown and McLaughlin played ■well on the wingf,, although the latter retained possession too long. Spiro, Raymond and Clarke wero tho best of the forwards. For Richmond, Davis saored two tries and Beyer converted both. For City, Dufty kicked a penalty goal. Mr. P. Rogers was referee.
