SUPERIOR COMBINATION
POINTS TO MANUKAU
Superior combination and better forward play was responsible for Manukau's defeat of Newton, which put up a good showing in the first half. Newton had Manukau hustled in the early stapes and narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. In the second half, howavor, Manukau played greatly-improved football. The forwards dominated the game in the loose and gave the, backs excellent support. Good handling by the Manukau vanguard was a feature of the game. The forwards swept over the opposition, which was beaten by a heavier pack. During the game Gault, on the wing, and Pickrang, at fiveeighths, played outstanding football. The former scored two good tries. Newton started off at a great pace and appealed likely to secure a surprise victory. Both the .backs and forwards swept over Maaukau, which had a busy half-hour defending. Better combination, however, gave Manukau several good tries, and it ultimately gained a comfortable victory.' For the winners, Hemi again played u fine game at five-eighths and he paved the way for most of fho fries. Until he retired with an injury, Trevathan also played good football. Gault. was prominent on the wing, putting in severa." dashing runs. Brouehton did plenty of good work at centre. Pickrang was outstanding, while Broderick and Waterie were conspicuous for izood football. Young played a good game at fullback for Newton, especially in the first half. Bright and Dempsey also played good games. Hutt, Quirke and Ginders were the pick of the forwards.
For Manuktiu, Gault (2). Pickrang, Mahima, Mason and Whye scored tries. Hemi converted three and Wateiie kicked a penalty goal. For Newton, Ginders and Bright scored tries. ■ Mr. R. Otto was referee.
