AWAPUNI GALLOPS

WORK ON HEAVY TRACK MAYSONG'S FOUR FURLONGS BAZAINE SCHOOLS WELL [from our own correspondent] PALMIiRSTON NORTH, Sal,unlay With the Hangitikoi and Manawatu meetings sot clown for next week, there was a good deal of galloping at Awapuni this morning. However, the track was very heavy and the (lags were wide out. Dtingarvan (L. 11. Jones) strode over «i round at throe-quarter pare. The statement emanating from Wellington that Dungarvan would be leaving for Australia at the beginning of the coming month lias been refuted. However, there is a possibility that he will cross the Tasman about January, when he will go in \V. Pine's charge. Alloa (W. J. McDowell) ran five furlongs in 1.1.' U. He was a little excited when going out to work, but he settled down later. On the score of looks he has much to commend him. Hound Score (W. K. Pine) left six furlongs behind in 1.28. The Gre.vspear gelding built up during his spell, and is carrying much more condition than previously. Mirth (Mansfield) had the better of Cloudy Hay (L. H. Jones) over half a mile in 555. The former ran one or two creditable races earlier in the season and might develop into 11 useful three-year-old.

Tail Light Sprints Jovial Prince (.Mansfield) and Gold Nymph (Chaplin) also accomplished half a mile. The former is shapely, but does not put on much condition. Gold Nymph is very solid, but is not being hurried. Tail Light (.13. Browne) drew away from Severe (W. E. Pine) at the close of a half-mile, the last three furlongs being covered in 425. The latter has dono little galloping since her return. Forest Glow (B. Browne) and Miss Pango (L. Parkes) ran the last six furlongs of a mile in 1.30 1-5. Although he has failed in his recent racing, Forest Glow looks bright. Maysong (Mansfield), who is temporarily quartered here, displayed a good turn of speed by running half a mile from practically a standing start in 555. Silver Brier Goes Well Silver Brier (Mansfield) ran right away from Taumau (R. Chisholm) in the closing stages of seven furlongs, tho last five being left behind in I.IOA. Silver Brier had a substantial advantage in the weights, but she accomplished her work really well. Princess La Jean (\V. J. McDowell) was doing; it nicely at the close of a gallop with Kitty Quinn (Chaplin), tho last tlireo furlongs taking 43 2-ss, time which the former could have bettered. Princess La Jean is in two events at Rangitikei on Wednesday. Bazaino (W. J. McDowell), who has been schooled occasionally, gave a splendid display over a round of tjie hurdles. He went at the first fence so fast that the onlookers held their breath, but Bazaino flew tho obstacle in magnificent style. He was steadied thereafter, yet was going strongly at the close. Santoft (Thomas) gave a satisfactory display over a round of the battens, although he showed a tendency to dwell at the fences. AWAPUNI GRANDSTANDS ' RE-ROOFING COMPLETED [from our own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday The work of re-roofing the two grandstands at Awapuni has now been completed, and everything will be in order for the meeting next Saturday. While the surroundings of the course still show evidence of the cyclone of January last, many of the trees which graced the property being now missing, the alteration in stylo of the roof, where the two stands are concerned, has enhanced the general appearance^. WINDSOR LAD FAILS POOR DISPLAY AT TRENTHAM After three successive victories Windsor Lad disappointed his admirers when he ran uplaced in tho July Steeplechase on the third day of the Wellington I'acing Club's winter meeting at Trentham last week. The class was stronger than any Windsor Lad had met previously and he ran very moderately, jumping poorly and being beaten a long way from home. Even though his saddle slipped back in tho running, ho was not going impressively at any stage and he will require to do much better if he is to prove good. ft was stated that Windsor Lad did not do well at Trentham and his defection from the Wellington Steeplechase on the first day was deemed advisable on this account.

lIAWERA HORSES CANDIDATES FOR MARTON [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] lIAWERA, Saturday Hawera horses engaged at the Rnngitikei Hunt at Marton and tho Manawatu Racing (.'lub's meeting were given their semi-final gallops this morning. James will ride him in the Ladies' Bracelet on Wednesday Luereee went fast to establish an early break on Le Grand over half-a-mile, but the latter finished the better and beat his companion by a length in 5-TJs —a useful effort. international shaded Mystic Glow over three furlongs in i!i)s.
