THE PLUNKET BALL

A BRILLIANT SUCCESS Springtime in England, that blossomladen time that has been the joy and inspiration of poets and artists for centuries, was wonderfully represented in the decorative scheme that had been carried out in the Town Hall in Wellington on Friday night when the Plunket Society held its annual ball. The hall was packed with dangers, states the Dominion, whose frocks, combined with the vivid colourings of the decorations added an unusually briliant touch to the scene. - From the dance floor, which resembled a large out-door dancing area, were seen the terraces fronting a typically English mansion and an enclosed park wherein were well-kept paths and a central fountain, the whole being bounded by green trees, The front of the stage was a long brick fence bordered on top with hundreds of real poppies in tones of flamo and orange. I'lie large area underneath the main part of the gallery, at the rear of the hall, was yet another triumph of the decorator's art. It was made to represent a verandah cafe and was complete with settees, numerous little cabaret tables, chairs, lido lounge chairs and all the many other accessories that make up the decoration of such pleasure haunts. Here, too, were to be seen large barrels in green and orange holding clusters of giant poppies and tall bamboo fronds. Over all, hung three enormous inverted orange poppies, their petals stretching several feet across, which shaded the central chandelier and the ones at each end of the ball. The poppy scheme was further carried out in the decorating of the smaller lights, all of which al«o resembled inverted flowers, but in shades of red, purple and flame. Debutantes of the evening were: — Miss Patricia Gray, Miss Dawn Payne. Miss Mavis Scott, Miss Lorna Nicholson, Miss Joyce Page, M iss .lean Wilson, Miss No I a Murphy, Miss Joyce Blewett. Miss Joyce Cox. Miss Oenone Marshall, Miss Joan Gibbons, Miss Marjorie Mulford, Miss Rae McCauley.
