THEFT BY SALESMAN

PERIOD OF DETENTION [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday A plea of guilty was entered in the Hamilton Police Court to-day by Hillary Ferris Browne, aged 35, to a charge of stealing £ll 10s, the property of his employers, Beatty (N.Z.), Limited. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said that accused was employed as a salesman of vacuum cleaners and washing machines. He had no authority to collect moneys from customers, but he accepted £ll 10s from one customer and left for Auckland. He was arrested on a charge of false pretences in Auckland arising out of the sale of a motorcar and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Accused had been twice admitted to probation. Accused said his trouble was due to the purchase of a car, the expenses of which were beyond his means. He paid a tribute to the consideration he had received from his employers. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, sentenced accused to a period of reformative treatment not exceeding two years.
