CONTROL BY STATE

AIM OF GOVERNMENT

"REVOLT IS INEVITABLE" VIEWS OF MR. F. W. DOIDGE [nY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] GISBORNE, Monday " In Now Zealand we have a Socialist Government, rapidly stampeding the country into a system of State control," said Mr. F. W. Doidge, in an address to business and professional men to-night. " A quarter of a century has elapsed since ] first heard Mr. Savage and many of his colleagues preach the doctrine of class war," Mr. Doidgo continued. "The overthrow of a dimly-apprehended capitalism was their one solution for our economic ills. Their lives long they have been at war with private enterprise and vested interests. " Their creed has never changed. That is proved by the typo of legislation which has gone 011 to the Statute Hook since they assumed the powers of Government. To-day, these men are our masters. They are the Ali Babas of our banks. Our primary industries are their playthings. Wo arc their servants. " Revolt against such a system is inevitable. Youth will lead that revolt. Access to opportunity is youth's birthright. Ambition is the greatest drivingforce in. life. Under the policy of the present administration, the glittering prizes which stimulate ambition are to be abolished.

" Alluring Promises " " Those who prosper are to pay; Mr. Savage has said so. Tho capitalist is to be regarded as possessing the soul of an adder; Mr. Semplo has said so. Taxation is tho steam-roller which is to grind us all down to 011 c common level. " Will the youth of New Zealand be content to live under such a system? Will youth succumb to the alluring promise of Mr. Armstrong, that we may set our pace to that of the sluggard and yet enjoy the amenities of American millionaires? Is there a youth in Now Zealand who can bo gulled into the belief that 0110 may lawfully live a champagne life on a beer income?" Never by legislation would any Government succeed in destroying the selfreliance and sturdy independence which were characteristic of tho young New Zealander, he continued. The Government which sought to deny j-outh access to opportunity and access to tho glittering prizes of life —that Government would destroy itself.

Youth in Politics Clearly, therefore, youth must play its part in politics. It should organise as youth had organised in Britain. At Home the "Imps," the Junior Imperial League, were a vitally-important political factor. They had a membership of a quarter of a million, and they played an immensely important part in the political life of tho country. At election time they were a potent and fearsome force.

Hero in New Zealand it was clear that all the Anti-Socialist forces must be consolidated into one organisation, Mr. Doidge said. "To approach the nuxt general election, or any by-elec-tion, with divided forces, would be suicidal. Not only must they close up tho ranks among contentious factions; they must also bring into line those tens of thousands of electors who at the last general election completely lost their political bearings. " Youth, by organising now, by encouraging young speakers, and by developing a really militant body, will become the spearhead of tho new movement," he concluded. " Already organisations on these lines are active in Auckland, Wellington and other of the larger centres. Soon youth will be on tho march politically from the North Cape to the Bluff."
