NEGLIGENT DRIVING

I TWO OFFENDERS FINED PROSECUTIONS AT OTAHUHU | "You had better be truthful next I time," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Otahuhu, yesterday, when Arthur Patrick McDonald, was convicted on a charge ot negligent driving. Sergeant >J. Cahill said two motor vehicles collided at Papatoetoe on March 18. Defendant and a man named Peebles were in one of the vehicles, and when the police made inquiries they were told that Peebles was the driver. When a charge was laid against him the real facts were disclosed, which showed that McDonald was the driver at the time. Defendant said he was working with Peebles on the truck, which was hired to a locai body After the accident he said Peebles was driving. This was not done with intent to evade any charges but to prevent Peebles from getting into trouble with his employer bv permitting another man to drive the truck The magistrate said the police had been put to considerable trouble. He imposed a fine of £2 and 22s costs. A charge of negligent driving was admitted bv Donald Bruce Connolly. Sergeant Cahill said defendant, in overtaking a cyclist on the Howick-Paku-ranga highway, damaged the cycle and tlie rider received injuries. Defendant had said he was dazzled by the lights of another car. The cycle carried adequate lights. Mr. Hunt: it was your duty to stop if vou could not see the road. A fine of £2 and 13s costs was imposed. Defendant was allowed seven days in which to pay.
