PRIEST WELCOMED
FUNCTION AT OTAHUHU A welcome to the Rev. Father Duffy, who has been appointed parish priest at Otahuhu, was accorded on Tuesday night in the Catholic Hall. Mr. J. Fitzgprald presided over a large and representative gathering. Among the visitors were the Rev. Fathers Wright (Otahuhu), Lockwood (Papakura), and Downey (Howick), who extended a warm welcome to the guest of honour. Brief addresses were also given by representatives of the parishioners and other Church units. In his reply, Father Dully referred to the development of Otahuliu. He said the first church was established in a whare in 1847. The first Catholic school was erected in 1848 and the present presbytery was built in the same year. The convent now occupied by the Sisters of Mercy was erected in 3866. The fine state of preservation of those buildings was a testimony to the faithful workmanship of the pioneers.
A number of musical items were given during the evening.
