LAKE PUPUKE
SANCTUARY PROPOSAL DANGER OF SHOOTING A recommendation that Lake Pupuke and the adjoining watershed should be declared a bird sanctuary was received at a meeting of the North Shore Boroughs Water Board yesterday in a letter from the Takapuna Borough Council Numerous complaints concerning the shooting of pheasants on the lake shore had been received by the Takapuna council, said the Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven. "It is the fear of tho council," continued Mr. Guiniven, "that with sportsmen travelling round the lake shore and shooting this small game there will bo a serious accident." It was contended by other member of the board that if the area was declared a sanctuary those residents included in its boundaries would immediately be prohibited from keeping either firearms or dogs.
It was finally agreed to defer tho matter and write to the Department of Internal Affairs for further information.
