£IBOO RAISED
TOPrY DAY APPEAL CITY'S GENEROUS RESPONSE RECORD NUMBER OF SALES The people of Auckland contributed generously to the Poppy Day appeal on Friday, tho sunt of .ClBOl being collected on behalf of the Auckland Heturned Soldiers' Association by helpers in all parts of the city and suburbs. This is n record amount, being more than was contributed last year. The total in ]934 was £1272, and in 1933 £lO9l. When the returns from several smaller districts are available, it is expected that the total will be in tho vicinity of £l^7s. Tho Poppy Day appeal has always been the one street collection above all others that has been universally supjMirted, and the public gave generously even during tho depression. The improved conditions were reflected ill the willingness with which people contributed toward the relief of distress among ex-servicemen—the purpose of the appeal. City and suburban streets were lined with collectors from early morning, and by mid-day the majority of people were wearing one of tho scarlet emblems. During the past few months par-tially-disabled soldiers made about 150,000 poppies, of which 48,000 were distributed for sale in Auckland. The collectors had no difficulty in disposing of this largo quantity. In expressing his gratification at the splendid response to the appeal, tho president of the Auckland Keturned Soldiers' Association, Mr. J. W. Kendall, thanked the Mayoress, Mrs. Ernest Davis, and the numerous societies that had provided collectors, and also the public for its generous
response. Commenting on the result, the Mayoress, who convened the meeting at which the organisation for the 1936 appeal was set up, said the response from the public had been most gratifying, and reflected the highest credit on all concerned. She was indebted for the help she had received from the members of the women's organisations, and she wished publicly to thank them for their efforts, to which the success of the campaign was largely attributable. ' c . Mrs. Davis, in company with Mr George Richardson, visited every depot on Friday morning. Before noon it was clear to the organisers that the sales would be much greater than those of last year.
INCREASED AMOUNTS COLLECTIONS IN SUBURBS The Pojjpy Day collection in the Western Suburbs Returned Soldiers' Association's district, comprising the New Lynn, Glen Eden, Henderson, Swanson, Orntia, Nihotupu, Titirangi, Waitakere, Kumeu, Waimauku, Riverhead and Hobsonvillo areas, realised £lO3 15s, with several small returns to come in. This is a very gratifying increase on last Poppy Day. The sum collected last year was £9O. The amount collected at'Northcote was £4l 8s 9d, as compared with £33 7s Id last year, and at Birkenhead £4l 7s 6d was raised, as against £3l in 1935.
