DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
OVER £7,000,000 THIS YEAR EXPANSION OF AIR FORCE Australia's expenditure on defence during the current financial year will rise to £7,352,000 —an increase of £2.000,000 on the previous year. The indications are that there will be further increases next year. The bill is small by comparison with those of other nations. Jt means that Australians are paying one guinea a head for defence, while Englishmen and Scotsmen pay about £2 15s. If the Commonwealth allotted for defence purposes the same proportion of taxes as is paid by Japan, the appropriation would be nearly £30,000.000. Defence improvements in Australia will include the expansion of the Royal Australian Air Force, and the overhaul of coastal defences. New guns are being installed in the emplacements that cover Sydney Harbour, and other works are in progress at Port Darwin, in the north, where a coast artillery unit of _the permanent forces is stationed. Air squadrons, are to be based on Darwin and on Fremantle, in Western Australia.
