NEW RAILWAY SCHEME TAURANGA TO ROTORUA Hopes ran high in the Tauranga district half a century ago as it was believed that the construction of a Tau-ranga-Rotorua railway was about to be Following is an extract from an article from a special correspondent which appeared in the Xkw Zealand Herald of April 24. 1886: — " The new railway will he the making of Tauranga. There appears to be every prospect of the company being floated in a very short time. A syndicate has been formed in London, backed by the Union Bank of Australia, who have 8 drawn up a prospectus and are prepared to subscribe £200,000. The .Government has pledged itself to give £83,000 worth of land as sufcsidy to the company."
