Girl Who Decided To Be Famous
Olivia tie Havilland, the 18-ycar-old [ woman star of the lavish pirate-thriller film, "Captain Blood," is the latest meteor in the Hollywood sky. Dark, smiling-eyed Miss de Havilland was born in Tokio. Her father was the British head of a firm of lawyers in Japan. Miss de Havilland has never been to England. She was taken to California when two years old and lived with her mother and sister in Saratoga. Not long ago Miss de Havilland decided she would like to be famous, so sho went to Hollywood and obtained a job as understudy in Max Reinhardt's E reduction of " A Midsummer Night's •ream" at tho Hollywood Bowl. When engaged to make a film of tho play, Reinhardt clioso the unknown young woman to play Hermia, one of tho best parts ever obtained by a girl of her ago. Critics singled her out for praise. Sho was then cast for a part opposite Joe E. Brown in "Alibi Ike." Her performance proved that sho had arrived, and as a result she was given the big feminine part in " Captain Blood." Warner Brothers have given her a long-terra contract.
