Chaplin Declines To Comment

REPORTED ENGAGEMENT TO PAULETTE GODDARD Charlie Chaplin is as sphinx-like concerning his reported engagement to his leading lady, Miss Paulette Goddard, as in recent years he has been about his film ventures, says a Shanghai writer. All he would say, when he and Miss Goddard, accompanied by her mother, arrived at Shanghai in the liner President Coolidge was: "Ask her." Miss Goddard merely remarked, cryptically: "Yes. But wo don't know when." Mr. Chaplin was equally uncommunicative later, when, after a long tour of Shanghai's night life, he was discovered with Miss Goddard and her mother at the Kuwutai Theatre, the largest Chinese theatre, in Avenue Edward VII., whither they had gone to obtain a brief glimpse of native theatricals. The couple looked supremely happy— Miss Goddard was dressed in green, with a short evening cloak —while nativo spectators flocked around them requesting autographs, in spite of the fact that the long Chinese play was unfinished. * Mr. Chaplin declined to confirm or deny the reports, but Miss Goddard was overheard to say: "Be careful what you say, or you'll have us married." At dinner at the Park Hotel it was likewise impossible to obtain confirmation of tlio reports.
