TRADE TREATY

AMERICA-AUSTRALIA NEGOTIATION DESIRED - -b WASHINGTON'S ATTITUDE By Telegraph—Press (Keceived April 21, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 50 The "Washington correspondent of the New York Journal of Commerce says the State Department has been urged by associations and individuals interested in increasing their trade with Australia to seek to negotiate a reciprocal trade agreement with that country. They suggest this course as a means of preventing reprisals and the imposition of quotas, or the erection of other barriers. The department denies that there is any reluctance to enter into such negotiations, but explained that President Roosevelt's programme is directed toward multilateral rather than bilateral arrangements, and that a scientific study will be necessary to determine the Australian products for which a market could be built up in the United States. It was promised that eventually the Australian Government would be asked to make suggestions for a reciprocal trade agreement, and that when both Governments began to consider the question little difficulty would be experienced in reaching a working basis.
