AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
HARM TO JAPANESE TRADE RETALIATORY MEASURES Times Cable LONDON, April 20 The Tokio correspondent of the Times states that the Government, holding that the Australian tariff proposals would destroy Japanese trade in cotton piecegoods and rayon, is considering retaliatory measures. Australia supplies more than 90 per cent of Japan's raw wool, and methods of retaliation without penalising the expanding woollen industry are being sought. In connection with Australian wool auctions, Japanese industrialists at present compete with each other. The authorities, accordingly, are in collaboration with manufacturers in trying to devise plans to concentrate purchases in the hands of ono buyer. This would eliminate competition as far as Japan's heavy demands are concerned.
