THE CLASSIC CLUB
EVENING OF MODERN MUSIC FIRST RECITAL FOR SEASON The opening rental this season of the Classic Club was held in the Overseas Club rooms last night. The president, Dr. S. Kenneth Phillips, presided. In welcoming the large gathering of members and guests, Dr. Phillips said the club had been formed in June, with the object of giving serious students of music the opportunities of meeting to sing and play good music. The past season had been a most successful one. He paid a tribute to the splendid work of the committee in the management of the club's aflairs. A programme of modern music was presented, including vocal and instrumental numbers, each item being of a uniformly high standard. '1 he opening number comprised a trio of lOnglish songs, "Daybreak" (Mallinson), "Song of the Palanquin Bearers" (M. Shaw), and "Windy Nights" (Stanford), sung by -Mr. Boger Errington. Following was a trio of foreign songs, " Stornellatrice " (Bespighi), "Cradle (.Jarnefelt), ntid "Serenade" (11. Strauss), sung by Miss Clare Brown. Other items included a bracket of operatic arias, "Air de Lia" (Debussy), and "On*? Fine Day" (Puccini), by Miss Lillian Kennedy; pianoforte solos, "A Romp" (Y. Bowen), and "Danse Negro" (C. Scott), played by Miss Joan Dowding; a trio of contralto songs, "Sea Wrack" (Hart}')) An Epitaph" (Besly), and "A Feast of Lanterns" (Bantock), sung by Miss Beryl Smith; an operatic aria, "Prologue," l'agliacci (Leoncavallo), by Mr. Arthur Thompson. The concluding numbers wore a trio of English songs, "Johneen" (Stanford), "Twilight Fancies" (Delius), and "Yung Yang" (Bantock), sung by Miss Gwcnda Weir; a trio of modern songs, "Ask Me No More" (Zulueta), "Shepherd's Song" (Elgar), and "Piggeanie (Warlock), sung by Mr. John I-ord; a trio of Bussian songs, "Why (Balakvreff), "Summer Night" (Arensky), and "The Little Hare" (Oui), sung by Miss Phvllis Bonner; pianoforte solos, "Sonatine" (Havel), and "Pantomine (de Falla), played by -Air. Jack Bucklev; and a trio of English s°ngs, "isobel" (F. Bridge), "The \Ylnte Kniaht" (C. Scott), and "My Captain (C. Scott), sung by Mr. Arthur ThompSuppor was served at the conclusion of the programme.
