TRAFFIC IN WAIKATO

TRANSFER OF CONTROL DECISION OF GOVERNMENT [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Tuesday The control of traffic on county roads has been transferred from county councils to tho Main Highways Board as from April 1, and traffic inspectors employed by the councils or group committees representing several councils have become officers of the board. For some months past tho Waikato County Council has been endeavouring to persuade the Main Highways Board to reverse a decision mado by the last Government to assume traffic control, but according to advice received to-day from tho Hon. 11. Semple, Minister of Transport, the previous decision has been confirmed.

In his letter to the council, the Minister said it was the policy of the Government to secure more uniform and effective control of traffic generally*. The Minister added that the subsidy now being paid to the council by the Main Highways Board would cease as from March 31 last.

Mr. F. S. D3-son, representing the Main Highways Board, wrote stating that the council's inspector, Mr. W. E. Nicholson, would become an officer of the board as from April 1. The council acquiesced in the decision and agreed to an arrangement for the hire of the inspector's car and loadometer to the board.
