TEMPERANCE WORK

Ponsonby.—The Ponsonby branch held the monthly meeting in St. John's Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Miss Read presided. Mrs. Keene gave an interesting report of the work done during the convention. Miss McKenzie spoke on Sabbath observance. It was moved that the members viewed with alarm the fact that some Sunday pictures were becoming a means for teaching anti-Christian doctrines. During the afternoon Mrs. Oourdie rendered two recitations very acceptably.

Devonport.—The monthly meeting of the branch was held last week in the Congregational Church, the president, Mrs. Williams, presiding. After business had been dealt with Mrs. Pay gave a report of the recent Dominion convention held in Auckland. Arrangements wero made for a cooking competition to bo held next month. Sylvan Avenue. —A meeting of the Sylvan Avenue branch was hold at the Friends' Meetinghouse on Wednesday. Mrs. Harle spoke on " Peace," and " Youth in the Churches," and Mrs. Wheeler on the fact of opium and cocaine being habit-forming narcotic drugs. Miss Ptidney reported on the Dominion convention recently hold in Auckland. Plans of work wero discussed. Otahuhn.—The Otahuhu branch met in the Methodist Sunday School on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Eccersall presided. Reports of the recent Dominion convention were given by Mrs. W. Taylor and Mrs. Eccersall, delegates to the meeting. Kohimarama-St. Heliers.—There was a good attendance of members at a recent meeting of the branch. Great interest was shown in the report of the Dominion convention. Tho president, Mrs. Kasper, gave an address on alcohol. Songs by Mesdames Williams and L. Eady, and a duet by Mrs. Phillips, sen., find Mrs. Phillips, jun., were much appreciated. The hostesses for tea were Mesdames Mills and Len. Phillips.
