FALSE PRETENCES
AIRMEN'S BENEFIT FUND UNAUTHORISED COLLECTOR [from oub own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday A charge of obtaining money from several Hamilton women by means of false pretences was admitted by Maurice John Sims, aged 39, in the Hamilton Police Court to-day. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson said the case was one which did not come frequently before the Court. On the date of the aerial pageant at llukuhia. which was arranged as a benefit for the wives and children of the airmen, ( Squadron-Leader M. C. McGregor and Pilot-Officer J. S. Fraser, who had been killed, accused solicited subscriptions for the fund without authority. He collected 5s from different women in Hamilton.
Accused's explanation, said Mr. Thompson, was that he had spent all his own money at the pageant and wanted some to carry on with. He had a heavy list of convictions. A sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed by the Magistrate, Mr. S. L. Pater son.
