SHIP REFLOATED

SALVUS AT WHANGAREI NO APPARENT DAMAGE TUG AND LAUNCH ASSIST [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Mondny The Tempus Shipping Company's tramp steamer Salvus, which went aground on a sandstone bank in the Whangarei harbour on Saturday afternoon, was refloated at 6.30 this morning after being fast for over 36 hours. About 200 tons of water was pumped from the tanks during last night to lighten the vessel. Early this morning the Kauri Timber Company's tug Lyttelton and Captain W. R. Patterson's powerful twin-screw Diesel launch Rakanui attached hawsers to the stem of the Salvus and, with the assistance of a particularly high tide and the Salvus' own engines, the suction between the bottom of the ship and the bank was gradually broken and the boat refloated. She was berthed at the Kioreroa wharf, one mile from the town, half an hour later. Just after the Salvus was refloated the Northern Steamship Company's steamer Claymore steamed UP the channel from Auckland, so it was not necessary. to call on her for assistance, as was anticipated would be required. A preliminary investigation disclosed no damage to the hull of the Salvus and it is not expected she will go into dry dock. It is expected the Salvus will leave to-morrow for southern ports to continue discharging her cargo of newsprint.
