CARNEGIE FELLOWSHIP
TECHNICAL COLLEGE MASTER YEAR'S LEAVE GRANTED Application for a year's leave of absence in order to take up a Carnegie Fellowship in the Imperial Institute of Education in the University of London was granted to Mr. A. B. Thompson, one of the senior masters of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, at a meeting of the board of managers yesterday. " A teacher of many years' experience, Mr. Thompson will undoubtedly bring back a store of information which should be of great value to the school," stated a report by the principal, Mr. G. J. Park. It was also stated by Mr. Park that Mr. Thompson's application might be used as an illustration to induce the Minister of Education. Hon. P. Eraser, to make it possible for members of the college staff to go abroad to obtain overseas experience, which was essential to the progress of technical education. " I am keenly in favour of members of the staff going abroad," said Mr. Park. " It is nry opinion that little is to bo learned from other schools in New Zealand concerning the technique of teaching technical school subjects, but I am confident there is much to be learned from methods adopted overseas. It would seem wise to spend from £IOO to £2OO every two or three years in financing teachers who would visit Australia, Canada or tho United States to study teaching technique. We do not hesitate to spend large sums of money on material equipment, and we should not hesitate to spend equally on the personal equipment of our staff." Mr. A. L. M. Perry, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys' High School, at present on leave of absence in England, Ims been awarded a travelling scholarship by the Qirnegie Corporation of New York, says a Press Association message. In England Mr. Perry has been engaged in investigating problems in post-primary education, with special reference to tho needs of New Zealand.
