TRAM WINDSCREENS
WIPERS TO BE FITTED TRANSPORT BOARD'S DECISION A decision to fit windscreen wipers and visors to the Auckland tramcars was reached at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board yesterday. It is estimated that the cost of equipping the 222 trams at present in commission wdl amount to £1443. In reporting to the board the manager. Mr. A. E Eord, said that for some time experiments had been carried out with a view to ascertaining the most suitable type of windscreen wiper. Two cars had been fitted with mechanism specially constructed at the workshops, the wiper itself being purchased locally. The men on whose cars it had been fitted had reported strongly in its favour. With the new system of windscreen wipers, it will be necessary to replace the present motorman's window by a fixed one and provision has been made for an adjustable green sun visor. The estimated cost of fitting a train with these improvements is £6 10s, a total of £1443 for all cars. It was recommended by Mr. Ford that a start be made with this work, for the present day conditions made it necessary for such equipment to be fitted. On the motion of the chairman, the Hon. H. G. It. Mason, the manager's recommendation was approved.
