HAWERA TROTS

TO-DAY'S OPENING AUCKLAND HORSES ENGAGED CHANCES OF BONNY AZURE The Hawera Trotting Club's Easter Meeting will be opened to-day. A fine and even class is engaged in the chief events, the Cup and the President's Handicap, and, especially in the twomile race, fancies will take a wide range.

The meeting between the Auckland candidates, Ironside, Gold Dredge, Bonny Azure and Ringtrue, and the Canterbury representative, Subsidy, who is considered the pick of the Southern brigade, has created very keen interest in the trotting races. Nelson Chief is likely to play a prominent part and in the other events Wanganui form should be useful, although fresh horses will make things interesting. The track, even if the fine weather continues, will not be fast, as it has a heavy sole of grass. The win and place betting system will be in operation. Cherrill made the pace from Parochial and Treasure Bond for nine furlongs of a 12-£urlong effort, but she faded in the straight. Treasure Bond holding Parochial easily, to run the last mile in 2.21 and tho final half in 1.7 3-5. Had Hori Bingen and Sir Frank not been eased in the straight, they would have shown improvement on their 3.42 task. Nelson Chief and Great Jewel worked a mile and a-quarter at a 2.32 gait, and Autumn Lou, who made one bad lapse, beat St. Hal and Worthy Song at the same distance in 3.5. Aristotle went a mile and a-quarter at a 2.25 rate, the last half in 1.8. Bonny Azure and Rayon d'Or worked two separate heats in 3.56 and 3.53 respectively. Gold Dredge, Bronze King and Winaway, who arrived in good order, were restricted to jogging on the inside track. Although she has not been officially scratched, Native Tree will not start. J. A. Gerrard stating she would be giving away too much time and would be bettor suited at the Manawatu meeting.

ADDINGTON TRAINING REY SPEC'S SMART EFFORT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Perfect weather and a fast track favoured to-day's training at Addington. Vesuvius wont a mile in 2.12 2-5. Mataunga trotted a liiiie and a-half in 3.43. Southern Chief worked two miles at an oven pace, and .Norman Fox, a mile and a-half in 3.38.

All Sunshine and Key Spec were companions over two miles, the latter recording 4.24 J-5, after covering a good deal of extra ground. The lley de Oro gelding gave a tine display and as a result, lie has come into favour for the l'-aster Handicap. Tempest, Cloudy Range and Wrecker were not fully extended to go two miles in 4.47. George Rev, Queen Author and Lone Derby went a mile and a-half in 3.26.

Battlefield made the pace for Llewellyn's Pride over a mile and a-half, covered in 3.24, giving a fine exhibition. Both horses are particularly well and should race prominently on Saturday. Lynwood (in saddle), Kaydus and Broughshane set out on a mile journey and, after a great exhibition of pacing, the latter pair finished in 2.11 4-o, the first half-mile taking 1.7 2-5. Lynwood broko down badly 100 yards from the post and is an unlikely starter. Teviot Downs pleased by the manner in which he worked with Grand Mogul and Rongomai, and while speed was not the object, the journey of two miles was completed in 4.48 2-5.
