TAURANGA BOROUGH
CHEAPER ELECTRIC LIGHT BUILDING ACTIVITY [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] TAURANGA. Thursday The Tauranga Borough Council has decided that as from May 1 tire electric lighting charge be reduced from 5d to 4d a unit net and that the gross charge be reduced to sd. It was stated that the reduction meant a concession of £BSO a year to consumers. The Mayor, Mr. L. it. Wilkinson, said he submitted the reduction with confidence. He thought the council could make a further concession next year. The Mayor also submitted a proposal that a reduction in the tariff for heating in churches be made to that charged for theatres and that no minimum charges be made for churches during the summer period. This matter was referred to the Electricity Committee. The town clerk, Mr. It. B. Shearman, reported that the new valuation roll had been received from the Valuation Department. The total rateable value was now £439,622, while on the old roll it was £353,634, an increase of £85.991, or 24 per cent. The borough inspector, Mr. S. L. Potter, in a report to the council, stated that during March eight building permits were granted, the total estimated cost being £1256. For the year ended March 31, 1936. permits were issued for the erection of 51 dwellings, this being the highest number ever granted in the borough for one year The average estimated cost per dwelling was £641 and the total value of all permits for the year was £44,500. Included in the new premises was a block in the business area valued at £4OOO.
