QUEEN CARNIVAL

PONSONBY FESTIVITIES SUBSTANTIAL SUM RAISED The Ponsonby Queen Carnival, which concluded on Thursday night, resulted in the raising of over £6OO, which will be shared equally between the Ponsonby Boys' Band, the Ponsonby Swimming Club and the Ponsonby League Football Club. At the conclusion of the carnival it was announced that the Band Queen, Miss Dorothy Lynne, had topped the poll with 66,235 votes, the Swimming Queen, Miss Mona Leydon, being second with 57,001, and Miss Irene Robertson, tho League Queen, third with 41,882 votes. The crowning ceremony will take place at Scots Hail on the night of May 6, and Mr. J. Sayegh will officiate. Thursday night's festivities commenced with a procession of decorated motor-trucks from the foot of Grey's Avenue to the Three Lamps, where an amusing mock court was held on a large vacant section near the top of College Hill. Most of the leading shopkeepers and business men of the district were charged with various offences. Most of those charged appeared in the improvised dock and cheerfully paid half-crown and five shillings fines. Musical numbers were rendered at frequent intervals by the Ponsonby and Balmoral Boys' Bands, while the queen candidates also made appearances, each being greeted with prolonged cheers.
