EASTER HANDICAP

FORM OF CANDIDATES SPIRAL IN WINNING VEIN EPRIS A GOOD FINISHER BY SUNDRIDGE The winners of the lost half-dozen contests for the Easter Handicap, Pegaway, Hunting Cry, Great Star, Golden Wings, Jonathan and Hod Manfred, were all in tho first llight, but for the present at least a claim to that ranking 011 behalf of any of the candidates under review is withheld. Apparently, however, the same difficulty which presents itself to racegoers now, because of the even quality of tho field, has faced them each succeeding year, for of the six previous winners mentioned only two were favourites. Spiral has been rapidly making a new reputation for himself this autumn. As the winner at three years of a 10 furlongs handicap and of the New Zealand St. Loger, with a close second in the Great Northern classic, he was held up as a cup horse of the future, but in tho following season he won only once, that being the Wellington Pacing Club Handicap. In the current season he has won four times to dato. At Trentham and Awapuni he won really well over 10 furlongs, and as necks separated Fracas, Spiral and Namakia in the Christmas Handicap, won in 1.37 1-5, Spiral's ability to handle the course has been proved. Nun Nicer's Effort Eeroatu was never previously in better form than when he paraded at Kllerslie 011 Boring Day of last year, when ho ran Jonathan to a neck in the Railway Handicap. He was twico again runner-up before his winning turn came at the Takapuna meeting. At the Trentham autumn meeting lie made progress as tho distances of his races were decreased, being unplaced in the Thompson Handicap, second in the March Handicap to Friesland, and winner of the Suburban Handicap, six furlongs. Bereatu has not won beyond 6even furlongs and this fact may weigh against him in tho minds of some. Nun Nicer's best races this season have been over 10 and 11 furlongs. However, he has won at a mile, and after his recent racing he should be very fit on Saturday. The fact that he is to contest the Easter Handicap in preference to the President's Handicap, in which his chance appeared to be at least as favourable, is indicative of the confidence of his connections.

Refresher carries his age remarkably well, and should tho weather break his stock will advance for the mile event on Saturday. He has run in all types of races and won over nine furlongs earlier in the season. When last they met he was third to Friesland in a six furlongs race, and at the week-end he meets the younger horse on 251b. better terms.

Namakia as a Miler Early in December Namakia beat _ a smart mile field at Ellerslie and late_ in that month she filled third place behind Fracas and Spiral in tho Christmas Handicap. In winning the Paeroa Handicap at Paeroa she indicated that she was again approaching her best form. She won the Islington Handicap on the second day of the autumn meeting last year. Throughout tho season Royal Appellant had raced well, winning at 10 and seven furlongs, while three times ho was in minor places behind Mazir. In the Goodwood Handicap the latter beat him by a neck in 1.37 2-5. However, he ran much below his best form at Whangarei and in consequence has retreated from favour. On his Winter Cup success alone Epris would be entitled to weighty consideration for tho Ellerslie mile, but when that form is reinforced by good placed performances following an absence of some months from the racecourse it is certain he will be one of the main selections. Epris is a very determined finisher and since h : s arrival at headquarters he appears to have done well. TURF IN AUSTRALIA CAPRIS WINNER AT ASCOT (Received April 8, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY.
