NEWS FROM THE TRACK

JUMPERS WORK SOLIDLY FOREST GLOW AND WIDDEN SPIRAL IN GOOD HEART BY ARCHER The No. 3 grass was available at Rllerslie yesterday, but was not used extensively owing to the fact that more of the horses engaged at the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting are to have their final gallops to-day. On the grass Forest Glow and Widden encompassed a round in 1.43 2-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5 and the last four in 545. L. Knapp's jumpers did their work in good stylo and there was little between them at the end. Widden is not engaged on Saturday, but he is to compete in the hack hurdles on Monday, when he will bo ridden bv D. J. Burgess. h The members of W. Rayner's team, Spiral, Entail and Moquette, were allotted useful tasks. They are in good heart, Spiral being very fit after his recent racing at Trentham and Awapuni. T. Green is to ride these horses in their engagement!! at the meeting. The Great Northern Champagne Stakes candidate Notium was out doing easy work on the two-year-old track. He is carrying a bright appearance, and it should not be for lack of condition if he fails to mako a forward showing on Saturday. Notium is to be ridden by R. W. McTavish.

F. Davis allotted Karl, Birthday Party, Haut Monde and Black Friar easy tasks. His charges all look well and arc to be ridden by W. J. Broughton, who has only recently resumed riding after an accident at Riccarton last August. Davis won the Easter Handicap last year with Red Manfred. H. Goldfinch, who was to have had the mount on Friesland in the Easter Handicap, has been advised that the horse will not be starting at Ellerslie. Friesland will race at Feilding instead. CAMPAIGN PROSPECTS HORSES FROM HAWKE'S BAY LACQUER'S IMPRESSIVE TRIAL [by telegraph OWN correspondent] HASTINGS, Wednesday

The following horses are booked to leave here to-morrow morning for the Wairarapa:—Lacquer, Stitchbird, Big Dook, Pladie, Silver River, Gay Hunter, Speed, Royal Solo. Those for •Feilding are Journet, Ben Braggie, Hunting Cat, Royal! Banquet, Candico, Sardius and Passion Flower.

Lacquer was responsible for an impressive gallop ove;r seven furlongs in 1.29, which was good enough to win any open race, as tho plough track was heavy. Silver River wasi lucky to win at Pahiatua, the flying start being directly responsible. Gay Hunter is sure to run a fine race, but both are up against the Trentham-trainod Deficit.

Speed galloped well this morning, when defeating Hunting Cat over a mile in 1.45, but at the weight, the improving hack, Erua, should extend Speed all the way. Royal Solo may l>e a better mare on Monday after Saturday's race. Journet has developed his former bad manners and iis not to be relied upon to leave with his field. However, even at his best, hti would have a difficult task to beat Clarion Call.

After the Napier meeting, Ben Braggie was sent to the pastures for two weeks on account of soreness and he has now been in work for only a week or two. He may be in need of a race.

Hunting Cat may not be s.uited by either the sharp turns or the short straight at Feilding, but he should be in good fettle at Hastings on the following Saturday. Royal Banquet may forfeit his cup engagemont for the Onepnhi Handicap at Feilding. This horse is fit and ready to reproduce his Hastings form.

Candico and Sardius will represent Hawke's Bay in the Taonui Nursery Handicap, but perhaps the former will negotiate the turns the better. However, both may find that Laughing Lass is as good as she is reputed to be. Passion Flower ran fourth in the Thompson Handicap and was leading at the nine furlongs in the Hawke's Bay Cup, so that the distance of the Halcomb Handicap should suit her admirably.

RACES AT HAWERA IRONSIDE'S CUP FOLLOWING GUNMETAL AND BLONDIE FIT [by TELEGRAPH—FROM ABAYDOs] HAWERA, Wednesday All the tracks were open at Hawera this morning, but only a few trainers used the course proper. The poles were very wide out and the footing dead. Consequently the times were slow. Gunmetal was the only cup candidate hoppled up. Assisted by Blondie, he went attractively over a mile and five furlongs. They ran home very smartly, and BlonrJie, who is improving, finished close up to Gunmetal. Celebrity had no trouble in holding off Cams at the end of a mile and a-half, but the latter shaped well for a mile and a-quarter. Worthy Song, who looks well, went with them for the middle mile.

Ladv Snips had too much speed for Baron Grand in the final quarter of a 10 furlongs task, while Stalky, who went with them part of the way, broke up. On the inside grass track, Sir Frank had a shade the better of Hori Bingen at the end of a mile and a-quarter, but both novices gave a sound display. Ironside and Treasure Bond, both free-legged, worked strongly and have taken no harm from their Wanganui racing. Although he is giving away a little to start, Ironside has a good following for the cup.

Cherrill was let oIT with an easy task as she has again lightened up. Parochial who is thriving with racing. paced freely over a mile, and Tollgate worked solidly over a mile and a-half. On the dirt track, Waikato Prince trotted three circuits. He was a little pore after his racti the first day at Wanganui and did not start smoothly, but he appeared quite sound to-day. Autumn Lou. who arrived yesterday, was given easy work. J. T Paul is due to-night with Ringtrue, Nelson Chief and Great Jewel, while the Canterbury horses Subsidy, Aristotle and Golden Cross will also arrive. Aristotle and Golden Cross will be bracketed in their engagements. Probable arrivals in the morning are Bonny Azure and Gold Dredge. The field is very even but the four Auckland horses are in most favour here at present.
