ELLIOT CHAIRMAN APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, "Wednesday Sir George Elliot has been appointed chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand in succession to Mr, William Watson. Sir George Eljiot has been a director of the Bank of New Zealand since March, 1919, when he was appointed aa a Government representative upon the board. He was elected chairman in April, 1922, following Sir Harold Beauchamp, who had held the offioe from 1907 to 1912 and from 1913 to 1922. Sir Harold's predecessor was Mr. J. B. Blair, who was chairman for five years. Sir George Elliot resigned the chairmanship in March, 1931, retaining his membership as a director. In the sue. ceeding years the chairmen were:—Mr. William Watson. Mr. Oliver Nicholson" Mr. R. W. Gibbs, Sir Harold W champ and Mr. Watson. Mr. William Watson was first ap. pointed to govern the affairs of the Bank of New Zealand as far back as 1893, when he became president, ag the term then was, the Government deciding to appoint its own nominee to preside at meetings of the directorate. Hi» term of appointment was 10 years, but. after four years, the Legislature altered the constitution of the board in a way that involved the abolition of the Government-appointed president."
