PLAY AT MAUNGAKIEKIE

FINE ROUND BY J. H. EARLE Although the one Tree Hill course was playing fast, there was little excuse for bad putting and good scores were to be expected. J. H. Earle was responsible for a fine round of 71, one stroke below the scratch score of the course. He failed to obtain the correct figures at three holes, but carded four birdies to win the senior medal. Earle is another young player of promise and his progress at Easter will bo followed with interest. I. McOwan played his usual sound golf to tie with Earle, and it was only after a count-back over 15 holes that he lost the decision. McOwan was in a good position at the 17th, but that green was particularly slow and an error of judgment cost him the chance of winning. D. McCormick was in a winning position two holes from home, but he failed to obtain a 4 at either of the finishing holes and his total was one more than those of the leaders. The scoring in the B grade was equally good, J. L. Gregory's 67 net winning from J. Sherlock and J. Cochrane. Gregory is a young player with a really fine style and it should not be long before he is on a single-figure handicap. He hits his shots well, his drive being particularly impressive, and he should develop with experience.
