UNSEASONABLE RAINS
HAURAKI PLAINS DISTRICT WETTEST SUMMER FOR YEARS The Hauraki Plains have experienced one of the wettest summers on record since the land was opened up about 25 years ago. With the exception of a dry fortnight before Christmas, in which the more fortunate farmers harvested their hay, scarcely a week has passed with* out some rain falling. As a result, dairy production is almost as high as in October and November, the flush months. However, farmers fear that the soil, not having dried properly all summer, will quickly churn into mud when winter comes.
