FLOOD STEMMED
MANAWATU EIYER BREAK IN STOPBANK WORK CARRIED ON ALL NIGHT [UY TELKGRArn —OWN* correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday Working all last night with horses, scoops, and sandbags, Makerua Drainage Board employees and settlors spent an anxious time trying to stem the Manawatu River flood waters at the point where the stopbank collapsed at Seifert's drain at the beginning of tho month. Thej' were eventually successful and prevented widespread damage, but it was 8 o'clock this morning before the river level began to fall. The Minister of Public Works, Mr. Scniplo, is to make an inspection of th#» locality on Sunday, when he will also view the damage at Coley's Bend, wher<» the receding waters aro expected to leave a big gap in tho stopbank that will require immediate attention. All district roads aro again open for traffic except tho main WellingtonAuckland highway at Wliirokino, which was covered to a depth of 18in. this evening, requiring the us® of the deviation route.
