OKARITO OPERATIONS The directors of the Okarito Five Mile . Beach Gold Dredging Company, Limited (South Westland) have decided to discontinue the southward cut on the lagoon side and to turn the dredge north and work back along the seaward side. This decision was reached as a result of the difficult dredging conditions which have existed continuously on the lagoon side of the claim, and which recently became exceptionally bad. For some time past the, digging rate has fallen seriously, with a corresponding decrease in the returns. It is expected that on the seaward cut tlie ground will become easier to treat, and better yardage figures will bo obtained. The intention is to dredge the whole of the northern end of the claim, which will take four or five years, and then to return to the ground how being left at the south end. Before starting north on the nejy cut the dredge will be beached to enable tho pontoons to be inspected and sheathed astern * This work has been started.
