PROVINCIAL TITLES CONTESTS AT WHAKATANE [from OCR OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Sunday The Auckland provincial surf championships held at Ohope Beach, WTiakatane, yesterday, proved an outstanding success. The weather was perfect and a record crowd witnessed the events. Although the sea was calm it became slightly choppy toward the end of the day. The Life-Saving Association was honoured by a surprise visit from the Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway. The Mayor of Whakatane, Mr. W. Sullivan, addressed the gathering, and said he was proud that New Zealand had produced teams which he felt sure would compete with success all over the world. The teams present represented Milford, Piha, Takapuna, Waitemata, Eastern United, Waihi, Tauranga, Opotiki, Patamoa and Whakatane. Results:— Surf Belt Race, Laidlaw Cup.—Final: Takapuna B (Stevens), 1; Takapuna A (Galbraith), 2. Stevens won a gold medal for his fine display. Girls' Land Drill Championship.— Milford girls (holders), 70.8 points, retained the championship, Tauranga girls being second with 67.6 points. The judge, Mr. Faulkner, said great credit was due to the winners owing to the severe strain caused by the hot sand. The Surf Life-Saving Association's pennant competition was won by Opotiki, 60.66 points, which will hold the pennant for one year. Patamoa was second with 55 points and Whakatane third with 53.4 points. The judge said the standard was an improvement on last year and he expected that it would not be long before these teaim would be competing for the Speedo Shield. , The surf teams' contest for a silver cup was again won by Takapuria (holders). G. Stevens, W. Warren. H. Mackintosh and E. McCassery, Waitemata being second. G. Stevens won the gold medal for first man home. The race was well contested under trying conditions in a choppy surf. The march past and grand parade championship was most spectacular. Takapuna won the Pacific Cup, previously held by the New Zealand champion team, Eastern United, which finished a close second. Milford was third and Waitemata, the provincial champion, was unplaced. The Auckland provincial championship for rescue and resuscitation, Speedo Cup, was won by Piha, 58 2-3 points, Takapuna being second with SSJ points, and Eastern United third with 57 2-3 points. The Walker and Hall Cup for girls' rescue and resuscitation was retained by Tauranga, tho points being as follows: — Tauranga, 56J; Waitemata, 50 1-3; Milford, 49 2-3.
