NOTES BY PHAETON

THE KING'S lIORSES LEASED TO LORD DERBY THIS YEAR'S EVENTS The Royal colours will not figure on the turf in England this year. The horses that figured in the nomination of the late King George, and who transfer to King Edward VIII., have been leased to Lord Derby for the whole of the present year. The list of the King's horses engaged in this year's classic events are as follows: —• Two Thousand Guineas. —Fairey. One Thousand Guineas.—Canvas, Vitrics, Parity. Derby.—Fairey, Canvas, Vitrics. Oaks. —Canvas, Vitrics, Feola, Parity. St. Loger.—Fairoy, Canvas, Vitrics, Parity. BRILLIANT SILVER RING A FINE PERFORMANCE By winning the Dunedin Cup under the high impost of 10.4 and running the mile and a-half in the fast time of 2.30 1-5, Silver Ring once again demonstrated that ho is wearing extremely well in his sixth year. The gay chestnut met a good field at Wingatui and won his race in a most convincing manner. Silver Ring made his debut as a two-year-old in the season of 1931-32, when he won leading honours, a brilliant victory in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs, in 1.24 2-5 placing him well in the limelight. At three years old he was a pronounced disappointment, but at four he won seven of the 11 races he contested. Transported to Sydney at five years old, ho won the Epsom Handicap, one mile, under 9.6, defeating a strong field of 19 and running the eight furlongs in 1.36 J. In the decision of the Wellington Cup, one mile and a-half, last month, he carried 9.9 and beat all his field with the exception of Queen of Song, to whom lie was conceding 311b. On the second day of the Trentham meeting lie won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, 1 mile 3 fur., under 9.13, defeating 10 opponents in 2.181. To date Silver Ring has contested 48 races, and his record is as follows: UnFirst Second Third placed At 2yrs .. 5 2 0 4 At 3yrs .. 0 1 1 10 At 4yrs .. 7 1 0 3 At syrs .. 22 0 2 At Gyrs .. 3 1 1 3 ■ 17 7 2 22 The leading lines in the pedigree of Silver Ring aro as follows: — Sire: Silverado, by Polymelus, son of Cyllene, from Silver Tag, by Sundridge, son of Amphion. Dam: Orange Blossom, by Nassau, sop. of William the Third, from Nantes, by Stepniak. eon of Nordenfeldt. THE AUSTRALIAN CUP THREE-YEAR-OLDS ENGAGED The full list of weights for the Australian Cup, two miles and a-quarter, to be run at Flemington on March 7, now to hand, show that the three-year-old division is well represented. Feldspar, by Thracian, and Allunga, hy Incliaquire, who fought out the finish for the loading position in the Victoria Derby, have each been awarded 8.6 in the forthcoming cup, which represents 61b. over weight-for-age. Palfresco, by Son-o'-Mine, winner of the Caulfield Cup, is weighted at 8.3, and four other three-year-olds engaged are handicapped as follows: —Bustard, by The Buzzard, 7.7; Nalda, by Verbius, 7.7; Loud Applause, by Limond, 7.3; Ismarus, by Thracian, 7.1. Three-year-olds have won the Australian Cup on 17 occasions, namely:— Barwon, 7.8; Nathalie, 6.8; Gasworks. 8.5; Richmond, 7.13; Sybil, 6.13; First King, 8.5; Navigator, 8.3; Trident, 8.7; Carlyon, 8.2; Dreadnought, 8.6; Coil, 8.0; Bobadil, 8.9: Great Scot, 8.0; Pendil, 7.1; Harvest King, 7.10 i Carry On, 7.3; Sylvandale, 8.3. PETER PAN IN ,WORK AUTUMN PROGRAMME Although the glamour surrounding Peter Pan's record was dimmed by reason of his unplaced performances in the Melbourno Stakes and the Melbourne Cup at Flemington last November, keen interest always attaches to his name. Tho champion continues in steady work at Randwick, but it is stated to be quite certain that ho will not bo a contestant at tho Victoria Racing Club's forthcoming autumn meeting, which means that, if ho is again called upon, his next appearance under silk will bo in New South Wales. Writing recently in the Sydney Referee, " Pilot" remarked: —" Looking at Peter Pan the other morning, I could not help being impressed by the fact that he was now a real stallion. Up to five years there was moro of a gelding than stallion in Peter Pan's appearance, and his marked development may cost him somo of the nippinesa that enabled him to make an Australian mile record last year." STUD ITEMS A NOTABLE FAMILY An interesting feature in connection with tho recent auction of yearlings at Trentham is that three daughters of Desert Gold were represented on tho catalogue, namely, Auratum, by Absurd, Fintry, by Chief Ruler, and Sahara, by Grandcourt. In addition,. Orozino, by Finland, and Marion's Birthday, by Psychology, who were also represented, aro out of D'Oro, fullsister to Desert Gold, and Aureate, who also has like relationship to the celebrated mare, contributed to the list. Then there was Nigger Minstrel, a full-brother to Desert Gold, who was represented with five yearlings. A bay colt from tho Night Raid mare Slackline was the ono of Nigger Minstrel's progeny who created most competition and it is considered ho was sold very cheaply at 220 guineas. NEW ZEALAND-BRED WINNERS Mananui, who has scorod a brace of victories at a short interval in New South Wales, is a four-year-old son of Limond and tho King Rufus maro Rose Queen. Ho was included among the yearlings sold at auction at Trentham in 1933 and was bought by Mr. W. C. Douglas for 325 guineas. Tho two-year-old colt Capaneous, by Night Raid from the Day Comet mare Sennight, who scorod his initial victory in Australia recently, gave riso to spirited bidding wheu submitted to auction at Trentham last year, and ho was secured by the Sydney sportsman Mr. It. H. McLean for 675 guineas.
