FIFTY YEARS AGO
DEVELOPMENT OF CITY Swanson Street apparently bore the name of West Queen Street in the early days of Auckland. Following is an item on" the subject that appeared in the New Zealand Herald of January 17, ISB6: — "Steps are now being taken to asphalt Swanson Street, which is again coming into prominence as a thoroughfare. In the good old days, Queen Street, as it was then called, was a busy street and led to the more settled portion of the city on Smales 5 Point." Another paragraph in the issue stated: —"The interior roofing of the public library and art gallery is well advanced and the brickwork of the tower is nearly completed. The fine proportions of the building are greatly admired."
