COMBATING DIPHTHERIA
MEASURES IN BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL CO-OPERATION More than 5000 children have been immunised against diphtheria by the Brisbane City Council during the year. Much of the work has been done at schools in the metropolitan area. The number of cases of diphtheria in Brisbane in 1934 was about 200 fewer than in the previous 12 months, and in 1935 there were about 100 fewer than in the previous year. As the council has to pay £3 3s a week for hospital treatment for each diphtheria patient, and the treatment lasts for three or four weeks, the cost to the council has been considerable. At present, the cost of immunising, apart from salaries, is about Is 8d for each child treated.*
